IPL Skin Rejuvenation

IPL Skin Rejuvenation

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Skin Rejuvenation is a non-surgical treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target specific chromophores within the skin, such as pigmentation and vascular irregularities. The light energy is absorbed and converted into heat, triggering a controlled response in the skin that supports collagen production and promote a more even skin tone.

IPL Skin Rejuvenation may be considered for individuals with concerns such as sun damage, facial redness, visible capillaries, uneven pigmentation, or mild textural irregularities. It is often selected to support overall skin clarity and tone. This is also an effective treatment for certain types of acne by targeting the bacteria that contribute to breakouts and reducing inflammation. The light energy helps to calm active acne, minimise redness, and improve overall skin clarity while also addressing post-acne pigmentation.

Suitability depends on several factors, including skin type, area of concern, and medical history, and is determined after a professional assessment with a qualified health practitioner to ensure the treatment is appropriate and safe. An IPL Skin Rejuvenation Treatment at LA Lips® utilises the UltraLUX® medical-grade TGA-Listed (ARTG No. 295158) IPL device.

The UltraLUX® machine harnesses 50 times the power of typical at-home devices, featuring several modes to actively treat the targeted areas.

What To Expect

Before Treatment

• You will have a consultation with a qualified clinician to assess skin concerns and suitability for IPL Skin Rejuvenation therapy.

• This will involve a review of medical history and any contraindications, discussion of treatment goals and expected outcomes, explanation of how the device works and what to expect during the session, and selection of the correct settings for your skin concern.

During Treatment

• The treatment area will be thoroughly cleansed to remove any makeup, sunscreen, or oils.

• A cooling gel and conducting medium is applied to the skin for comfort and to enhance light transmission.

• You and your clinician wear protective goggles to shield your eyes from the intense light flashes.

• A handheld IPL device is placed against the skin and controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light are emitted, targeting superficial capillaries, pigmentation, redness, uneven skintone, and acne-causing bacteria.

• You may feel a warm snapping or flicking sensation, similar to a rubber band on the skin.

• After the IPL treatment is complete, the treatment area is gently cleansed to remove any remaining conducting gel.

• Your clinician will apply a cosmeceutical Post Laser Recovery Serum to soothe, cool and protect the skin; relieving redness and supporting a calm and effective recovery.

• An accelerated and concentrated serum and lightweight moisturising crème, precisely tailored to hydrate and support the skin’s natural healing abilities, is applied to your skin.

• To conclude, we apply a cosmeceutical SPF 50+ sunscreen for added protection.

• Post-treatment, we highly recommend 20-30 minutes under the LED Light (Yellow Light) to aid in the reduction of swelling and encourage cellular waste removal (promoting detoxification and stimulating lymphatic flow). This is key to skin tone correction, as this process removes your body’s toxins and waste, leading to a clearer and more ‘even’ complexion.

After Treatment

• Mild redness or warmth in the treated area is normal and usually subsides within a few hours.

• Skin may feel like mild sunburn – this can last up to 24–48 hours.

• Slight swelling may occur, especially in areas with pigmentation or broken capillaries.

• Darkening of pigmentation (freckles, sunspots) is normal – they may appear more prominent before flaking or fading over 7–10 days.

• Mild flaking or dryness may occur as the skin naturally exfoliates (this is expected).

• Skin may feel tighter or slightly sensitive for a few days as collagen production is stimulated.

• Continue to apply a cosmeceutical Post Laser Recovery Serum.

• Results are best seen with a course of multiple sessions, spaced apart, often as part of a treatment plan.
Refer to 4 Treatment Modalities.

Avoid After IPL Skin Rejuvenation

• No sun exposure or tanning (including fake tan) for at least 2 weeks – use SPF 30+ or higher daily on treated areas.

• Avoid hot showers, saunas, spas, and steam rooms for 24–48 hours – heat can irritate freshly treated skin.

• Avoid active skincare products for 2–5 days, including: Retinol, AHAs (like Glycolic Acid), BHAs (Salicylic Acid), Benzoyl Peroxide, and Vitamin C.

• Do not scrub, exfoliate, or pick at the treated area – let any pigmented spots darken and flake off (let them shed naturally).

• No intense exercise for 24 hours, to reduce risk of overheating and irritation.

• Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours, as these can impair vascular response and skin healing, especially after vascular/pigment targeting.

Optional Add-On

Yellow LED Light

MediLUX® LED Device (ARTG No. 317123)

Post-treatment, we highly recommend 20-30 minutes under the LED Light (Yellow Light) to aid in the reduction of swelling and encourage cellular waste removal – promoting detoxification, stimulating lymphatic flow. This is key to skin tone correction, as this process removes your body’s toxins and waste, leading to a clearer and more ‘even’ complexion.

4 Treatment Modalities of Medical-Grade IPL Skin Rejuvenation

Vascular Therapy

Indicators: Superficial Capillaries on Face & Décolletage

Technology: Light is attracted to the blood vessels in the skin and cauterizes the vessel. The damaged vessels are removed via the lymphatic system.

Vascular Concerns (Face, Neck, Décolletage) Recommended Sessions: 2-4 sessions, 1-2 weeks apart

Vascular Concerns (Spot Treatment) Recommended Sessions: Performed every 1–2 weeks until the desired result is achieved

Maintenance Session: Required every 6 months

Important: Treat Pigmentation before treating Vascular

Pigmentation Correction

Indicators: Sunspots, Age Spots, Freckles

Technology: Light is attracted to the Melanin in the skin, heating it up and shattering the brown pigment. This Melanin either makes its way to the surface and naturally sloughs off or is removed via the lymphatic system.

Pigmentation (Face) Recommended Sessions: 2-4 sessions, 4 weeks apart

Pigmentation (Décolletage, Arms, Upper Back) Recommended Sessions: 2-4 sessions, 6-8 weeks apart

Maintenance Session: Required every 12 months

Important: Not suitable for hormonal pigmentation (melasma) or Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH); treating these types of pigment will cause more pigmentation to form

Photo Rejuvenation

Indicators: Uneven Skin Tone, Skin Redness or Flushing, Fine Lines & Wrinkles, Loss of Firmness

Technology: Light is attracted to water in the skin, heating the water to trigger a wound healing response. This process stimulates collagen and elastin production.

Recommended Sessions: 4-6 sessions, 4 weeks apart

Maintenance Session: Required every 6 months

Important: Treat pigmentation and vascular lesions first if present – full-face photo rejuvenation is typically used later in a treatment plan to refine overall results

Acne Management

Indicators: Bacteria, Active Papules & Pustules

Technology: Light is attracted to acne bacteria in the skin. This form of bacteria cannot breed in an oxygen rich environment. When treated with IPL, the light introduces oxygen into the skin essentially killing off this bacteria and reduces associated inflammation.

Recommended Sessions: Twice Weekly for first 2-4 weeks, then weekly or monthly as recommended by your treating clinician, until desired result is achieved

Maintenance Session: When Required

Important: Must not be used over broken skin, open lesions, or areas with active infection
